A Flower That Will Never Bloom

a flower that will never bloom

you were the spring
that never came
leaving me suspended in
a winter
that never thawed
sometimes the cutting winds
blow even still
all these years later,
making me look wistfully toward
the window where all the mama birds
are feeding their babies
or teaching them to fly;
instead i’ve had six years stolen from me
my body betrayed us both—
now i’ll never know your face,
your love, your touch;
i imagine you when i see spring flowers
or hear the laughter of the creek
when golden sunlight falls upon me in hymns of autumn
but winter is the worst because it reminds me
of the flower i will never see bloom.
