A Sailor Recounts The Sinking Of A Ship

written by: James Gabriel

match strike
born in a sulfur scream
fire engulfed the sail

the sea
unusually still
and soft
a black blanket
newly washed
swaying in the
breeze

we floated
she sank
as quickly as
she became enflamed

the ocean
extinguishing the
orange glow
permitting
cousin night
to resume its

raven sentinel
no moon to
guide us
a fact that
is later
greatly debated
