FLICKING LIGHTS

FLICKING LIGHTS

written by: Jeffrey Dean Gray

It was short
Off and on
One decorated room at a time
He smelled it in the air
A burn
Electrical
It sizzled like too much corrosion
His first thought was of the paranormal
Then in seconds, it changed
The fake moved inward
The lies
Taking over his brain like it always did
Comfort – absorbed the ‘80s in the ‘10
It was a full day
Before the neon moved again
The same smell with longer strides
They hummed, dimmed into a painful color
Smothering him
Too much corrosion
He could smell those old lies in the air
