Ghostly gray fronds of
desert rain sweeps mountains, drops
hailstones in their wake.

*

Lone old yucca, void
of white blossoms, is cruelly
lashed by cold hailstones.

*

Paradisiacal
pearl cloud in shimmering blue sky,
beyond gray rain’s reach.

(Between Tularosa & Carrizozo, NM)

*

Mystic cloud stork sits
upon crimson sunset nest,
dark bill pointing north.

(Near Vaughn, NM)

*

Teapot shaped or globe
on stem, green caps or red lights;
quaint water towers.

*

Western Stars, Moon Mist,
and Seven Winds: Endearing
“Mom & Pop” motels.

(Throughout Midwest)

*

Silhouette people
watch catfish mascot grinning
to catch rain in mouth.

(Crystal Lake, IA.
The “silhouette
people”
are black forms painted on

windows of an old trolley, which
faces town’s fish mascot)

*

Outside red and white
striped burger joint boy falls, yet
saves his ice cream treat!

(Despite his quick fall, the boy managed
to keep ice cream pointing straight up.
His grandfather quipped, “He broke his
leg but saved the ice cream!”)

*

Tornado shelter-
turtle- and duck-crossing signs;
must be Iowa!

(Ventura, IA)

*

Stars and Stripes, orange
windsocks, rainbow fish pennants:
gaily festooned docks.

*

Grand old paddle-wheel
boat, lake’s “Lady”, rests in style
while motors race by.

*

Truly ironic:
Sleek deer’s carcass lies within
feet of Killdeer Road.

(Clear Lake, IA)

*

Family cookout “grace”
in mother’s hushed tones drowned out
by thirsty dog’s gulps.

(Mason City, IA)

*

Aunt Mildred’s craft pride:
The Three Wise Men’s profiles in
gold-sprayed dry pasta.

(Manly, IA)

*

Ghostly rose perfume,
plump pink plastic rose; Neva’s
graveside gratitude?

(Britt, IA.
Neva was a grandmotherly
figure. Each time I’ve visited her grave,
there is “rose” – despite cemetery’s
very strict decorations policies. Ghost?)

*

Sunset’s swollen red
Sun-ball was – hours past – small
pale Sun in storm’s edge.

(South Central Kansas)

*

Lonely sands of near
hills amuse driversby with
dancing dust devils.

(Tularosa, NM)
