The Gift

She found it in the summery meadow
Warmed there on the vine
By July’s unblinking sun
A single strawberry
Swollen with ripeness
Blood red and full of sugar
Ready to split under the weight
Of its own sweetness

As the blue skies in her eyes
Devoured me
She slipped it past her cherry lips
And split it cleanly
With small, sharp pearls

And she kissed me as a softling
And we did share
The meadow’s fragrant bounty
And my body came awake
As the red nectar of love
Trickled from the corners of our mouths
