The Universal Universe

Planets are full of surprises,
mostly that there’s no surprise at all.
These other races just
want to get on with their lives
the same way we do.
Yes, they have their share of misfits.
Some use their gifts to make their world better.
Others use them as a hammer
to batter the unlucky down.
Sound familiar?

Yes, they may mate
with horns in the palms of their hands.
But they raise their children with care,
make all the necessary sacrifices.
Sure, there’s a few take the selfish way out,
let their kids drift, into who knows what.
But that’s how it is on Earth,
even with all our advantages.

Some write books.
Others are smart at business.
There are would-be space travelers in their midst of course.
They’re the ones that ask the most questions.

We’ve been on planets where the inhabitants
attacked us out of fear
and, one or two times,
because of warlike creatures
wrongly assumed theirs was the superior weaponry.

But mostly, it’s no different anywhere
from anywhere else.
And that’s why we do what we do –
explore the universe,
one common thread at a time…
