A Cold-Blooded Animal

dublin – a cold-blooded
animal. asleep, and heat
hitting – waking and
restless. people out walking.
gone swimming.
gone drinking.
men smoking cigarettes
with ass against shopfronts
and staring at women
who pass. for two
months in summer
our lives seem
most natural – fall
to their natural impulses.
red-brick-baked dust
makes such beautiful
buildings – the red
scale of lizards
by scrub and some bare
spanish road.
