A Passenger

A Passenger

written by: James Howard

Another time, another place….not here, not now. That ship has sailed, that chance has passed, if it were ever here at all. It’s all a hoax, smoke and mirrors, a rabbit in a hat.

You’re just a passenger on a ship adrift at sea.

That knowing look was nothing more than a wish. A desperate attempt at finding validation in an invalid life. It’s someone else’s life, someone else’s house in a world that someone else owns. Slight perfection at an imperfect time. That something in the night is not something for you.

You’re just a passenger on a ship that doesn’t go in reverse.

It wasn’t comfort, it was the desire for comfort. It’s the hope and dreams in a song someone else sang.
It’s not something that belongs to you. You can’t just take it like some stumbling thief in the night.

You’re a dreamer, a hopelessly lost romantic. You know very little about the world of love. Dream your dreams, save those feelings for late at night, when, even though you’re alone, you’re not really alone. Keep those ghosts close, it’s what you know, it’s all you know and ever will know. They’re your only friends.

You’re just a passenger who missed his stop on a ship that doesn’t go in reverse.

A rebel who built a crooked house on a crumbling foundation. A spectator who can’t see. A rose covered in snow.

You’re nothing more than a passenger on a ship that only moves forward.

Ain’t no going back now, it’s full steam ahead through the rocky shoals where there are no lighthouses to warn of the dangers ahead. A damaged hull, compromised integrity. It’s where you’re meant to be. It’s your place, it’s your life, it’s your destiny.

You bear the weight of the albatross. You are the mariner.

Still, you’re nothing more than a passenger on a ship adrift at sea.
