A Twig for a Cane

A Twig for a Cane

written by: KCEM

In the woods, she is writing something,
Halfway through it, a man carrying a cane
Carrying it behind his shoulders and
Stretching it underneath both his arm sockets

Her first thought: He is… just exercising
Trying to keep his back straight by
Forcing his shoulders to straighten
It’s just a twig made into a cane, cane, CaNe

Then he took it in one hand and
Her Heart Rate jumped up…up…UP
His protruding belly and that cane swinging
She saw it like that in her childhood, it’s not the

Cane that’s painful – not half as much as the Intent
Of the childhood monster aiming to use it on her
The child whose ingredients of life require
An entirely different kind of intent
