An Absent Dad’s Sorrow

An Absent Dad’s Sorrow

written by: Ursula Levi

I’m sorry that I wasn’t there
When you were growing up
To give you all the comfort
When you needed all the hugs
To be the one who waited up
When you went on your first date
To be the one who cheered you on
When you came round to hit home plate
To be the one you pointed to
While standing on the stage
Saying, “Life’s a book and Dad’s the one
Who always turns the page.”
I’m sorry that I wasn’t there
I know it makes Mom proud
To say you are her children
When she’s standing in a crowd
I’m sorry that I wasn’t there
The blame is mine to keep
I hope I have the chance to say
“I’m sorry,” when we meet

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

My parents were both very involved in our lives before and after their divorce, so I wrote this while I imagined a dad who missed many opportunities would feel when he finally got his chance to be with his children, whatever the circumstances were for those situations in which he was unable to be there.
