Big Mama

In the predawn I hear her.

Big Mama Crow is awake,
Singing to her consorts and
Sleepy babies and one bleary
Human whose coffee is cold.

She is a shadow come alive.
She is a reminder of
The dark things that always
Seem to sing a little
Louder than everything else.
