Cats at Night

Cats at Night

written by: Leigh Cuthbert

Stealthy assassins,
patrolling the neighbourhood.
Agile, timid felines—
eyes aglow beneath street lamps.
No set route, yet knows the way.
Nocturnal sight as clear as day.
Coming to rest beneath a parked car,
not long stopped,
to shelter from the rain
and steal heat from a still-warm engine.
Birdsong, the morning’s symphony,
like the Piper’s flute—
the signal to leave.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

This poem was inspired by observing the quiet movements of cats during the early hours—how they blend into the night with purpose and grace. It’s a small tribute to their independence and mystery, and to the unnoticed details of the world when most of us are asleep.
