Drunkgod

Drunkgod

written by: Leonard Ifeanyi Ugwu, Jr.

Do you perceive the fragrance of a mystical being lurking in the wave, fingering the waters amidst dark reflection of dreaded days?
Do you sense the scent of saints and the running ooze of a drunkgod armed with a calabash of soured liquor?
Here he comes with his entourage, the pen, the wit of craft and might.
Here they come to announce the darkness woven in bats’ eyes of light and the light embedded in tomorrow’s darkness.
Open his calabash and sip from the fountain of his ink, sip from the river-song of his screaming gong laid on the reservoir of wisdom?

I’m a drunkgod living in the midst of sane men.
The crier raving mad like tattered breeze. A famished dog set free amidst fresh smoking fish.
I’m a drunkgod, the rock dripping water on the belly of the lying stream. Twip-twip-twip.

Yet, like the Nazarene they chant in unison,
‘Tear him for his bad verses, tear him for his bad verses.’
I’ve become the reincarnate of ‘Cinna the poet’ from ancient classics.

They call me drunkgod for my passion is like the ego of a wild rabid-dog on the parvis of a cathedral.

Whenever the goddess of art flames my heart, my ‘chi’ becomes afraid of my becoming. He casts me into the den of drunkgods where our fire roasts the tongue of the sun.

I’m a poet – drunk in endless musing.
I’m a mystical being with a liquor of mad waters.
I’m the drunkgod, I’m not like an ordinary man.
