Equinox

Equinox

written by: Stephen Kingsnorth

More mellow yellow, read like Keats-
full traffic lights, contained one leaf –
fall glossy conkers under wraps
dark leaf mold worming into cracks,
burnt umber under smoky mists;
both fug and crisp within one day.
In winter prep, cutbacks and prune
those wizened faces, berries left;
quite thankful, summer that’s withdrawn,
the smoggy heat then closet storms
with rampant growth, mind of its own.
Now harvest home, by night combined,
as final fruits weave hedgerow growth,
the fastest briars in the patch.
But theirs will be for birds’ dispatch,
seed flown, sown, serendipity.
