For Love

For Love

written by: Beth Warren

‘I just wanna be loved,’ she said.
‘Being on my own fills me with dread.’
She cried out, ‘I hate being alone,’
as she distractedly and endlessly checked her phone.

‘But darling, don’t you see
That he is not who you want him to be?
He has had issues in the past
And into the present, that shadow is cast

He has treated you with disrespect.
This kind of behaviour you have now come to expect.
For he uses gaslighting to control
To undermine your confidence and write on your soul.

At the beginning, he had us all fooled
For he was charming, his deception well-schooled
He professed a great love for you
He saw you as an easy target to pursue.

You had just come out of a long relationship
Being single, you needed to grip
You floundered for a while
Then, flattered by his engaging smile.

He made you feel wanted and beautiful again.
He transported you beyond your singular ken.
They were happy, carefree days,
But you soon became lost in his controlling haze

He is a master manipulator who reads you like a book
He studied your every move, your every look.
He constantly puts you down.
You are no longer his queen, wearing a crown

He grinds your self-esteem into the ground
By yelling at you when there’s no one else around.
Who are you talking to? Don’t talk to them!
Why are you wearing that short hem?

You talk too much and laugh too loud.
You embarrass me in a crowd.
Everyone thinks you’re not right in the head.
Behave yourself and go to bed.

Believe me, darling, when I say
That time will come, even if it’s not today,
When you see what we see,
When you do, please come to me.’
