Foreign Exchange
written by: Tony Covatta
Home from traveling abroad, Larry stopped to refuel his Mercedes and score munchies. Preoccupied with his chips, he carelessly offered a UK £5 note.
“Beautiful! Queen Elizabeth! But the store needs American money,” exclaimed the pudgy, frowsy, anonymous clerk. “Sell this to me?”
“I’ll think about it.”
Outside, Larry did. “Why brush her off? I’ll never use it. I’ll sell it to her. What’s today’s rate?”
Returning inside, sighting the forlorn clerk made him switch gears: “Here—a present.”
Smiling, buoyed up, she declared: “Thank you. I’ll keep this forever.”
This hit Larry: “My first profit ever from foreign exchange.”
