Halloween and Humankind

written by: Nazam Riar

Apple bobbing and Soul cakes
young and old enjoy homemade bakes
costume parties and jack-o- lanterns
bonfires and lighting the candle
all is over and the reality strikes
and plays the real prank
which for the humanity is difficult to handle!
2:58 a.m. Fifth Avenue, New York, U.S.A.
Dressed in guise she walks upbeat
after the Halloween party is over
reaching for a cab to go back home
holding the pumpkin shaped tote with aplomb
she overlooks
an old homeless woman looking for a piece of meat
in the garbage bag outside the store in the high street.
3:10 a.m. Connaught Place, New Delhi, India
“The world is a global village
look I uploaded this Halloween party’s image”
the youngsters blabber to each other as they walk down
under the influence of their drink
they don’t notice an old man on the footpath
whose milk bottle they have kicked at the brink.
‘Trick or Treat’
‘Trick or Treat’
the words reverberate in the air
Alas! For some on the streets God has only tricked them
for them there isn’t any treat
nobody stops to look at them, nobody does care
they for others are not worth even a momentarily stare!
