How Far Can I Fall?

Downtown I’ve arrived, wrong side of the tracks
Life was fine before the Wall Street Crash of twenty nine
Hard silence greets me entering this derelict place
I fall into the room, no curtains, no bolt on the door
A broken stool to sit on, the floor bare, no carpet
I watch the lights come on outside as dusk descends
“Bennie Moten” record playing hauntingly from downstairs
Watching the moths circling the dim light above me
One louse filled second hand bed laying there waiting
Yellow stains from smokers’ lung clog the walls
Derelict houses all around windows facing back to back
Standing I look out, staring back a cold and sallow face
Mine
I take my glasses off lay down waiting for night’s darkness
Entering sleep my mind races, but,
No eternal road beckons, winding to my salvation

I'm a retired Civil Servant, I worked for the Ministry of Defence retiring at the age of fifty. I am now seventy years of age and was encouraged by my good friend Annie Mulholland in February 2016 to write short stories and poetry as she thought I was well capable of writing both. I started writing in earnest in June of 2016. I have joined a writing group "Tenovus write with us".
