If Pain Had a Voice

If pain had a voice,
it would not cry out.
Thunder is noticed.
Pain has survived
by learning the language of dust.
It would settle
in the pause between words,
in the glance withdrawn too soon,
in the hand
that forgets what it reached for.
And perhaps
the tragedy was never
that pain was voiceless—
but that it borrowed
every tongue on earth,
and each of us
mistook the echo
for someone else’s.
