Incensed

Incensed
by all the cruelties of
the current year:
The deaths, unkindnesses
and souls locked in by fear
I cultivated
inner light/and lit
a flame in mind;

burned incense
at the altar of
human kindness and
tried to share
words with a world
in isolation yet
somehow connected
like never before

this year
abandoning
commercialism
I hope
to recapture that spirit
of magic, thanksgiving and light
which I recall from childhood:
heady, incense-scented
burning boldly
Christmas-candle-bright.
