Last Fruit

Last Fruit

written by: Paul Thwaites

The wasp has taken you ~
Round orb of sweetness,
Neglected unto this hand
Unpicked,
Therefore hang,
Forgotten bauble
Apple blinded in my eye,
That I passed by.

The rest are gone ~
Progeny of life’s sweet seed,
To basket, press ~
That lips may sing,
In merriment of colour,
And sparkle in the glass.

Dangling in forgotten orbit,
Red as Mars ~
Come not to maiden’s hand,
Or Adam’s mouth tempt with this prize ~
Instead the wasp and ant your knowledge suck,
Both in their own ways wise.

Fallen fruit,
Rotten to the core, in earth interred,
To lift in blood red orchards of the dawn,
And climb your monument above the hill,
That I salute you with this golden cup ~
To those I crushed, and thee I spared.
