 My Heritage

written by: Maggie Chatterton

There's red hidden
Beneath all the white.
Dark, wise eyes peer out
With high cheek bones
And straight black hair
Framing a grieving face...
I see the red
Hidden behind the snow:
A history drenched
With all the blood and suffering
Of lost persons of the past.
Red hidden within the white,
Merging into a swirl
That makes up me
With dark eyes
And high cheek bones,
I peer at my hidden copper
As the family tree
Falls soundlessly to my feet.
I hear the nature around me
As I breathe in deep.
I feel the spirits guiding me,
Allowing me to merge
My hidden red with the snow.
