Nature’s Culling

Nature’s Culling

written by: Hanna Biali

The fiery sun sinks below the horizon,
slowly dusk settles into night,
an air of anticipation is rising
as slithering bodies pack tight
above the black opening of the cave.

Grown hungry after 7 days
the pythons return for their favorite prey,
the bats, who’ll swarm as soon
as there is light from the moon.

Here they come in their thousands,
many to their doom
being quickly squeezed to death
in a silken cocoon, then consumed.

Satiated, the serpents slide away,
not needing to feed for many a day.
