Nobody Writes to Me Anymore

written by: Mainak Gupta

Nobody writes to me anymore
Nobody calls, nobody visits
It was my stupidity. My ego. My apathy.
Nobody likes a dead telephone
How long will you keep the vintage set
For nostalgia, for comfort?
For it reminds you of your first love?
That love is gone.
The telephone doesn’t blip anymore
The letters were not answered
The questions avoided
Who will want to write to me anymore?
Who will visit?

I hear voices from a land afar
Someone calling a familiar name
A name that sounds like mine
Or I might be mistaken.
I don’t respond. I don’t care.
The voices stop.
Nobody is calling out the name anymore
No phone calls
No letters
My address buried deep inside.

I can hear guitar strings
A familiar tune, now foreign.
I hear faint voices that I once knew
Voices, that I know and don’t.
That I have nothing to do with,
Anymore.
I am here.
Alone.
Nobody calls. Nobody writes.
Nobody visits.
And I need to make my peace with it.
