October, a poem by Jackie Figueroa at Spillwords.com

October

October

written by: Jackie Figueroa

We stood there a while,
Seen but not heard.
Pretending the air didn’t ache.
The silence begged for a break,
I almost asked it:
Did you ever think I’d be good for you, too?

Once again, my fear dressed itself as cold.
We lingered for a mere moment more,
Waiting on words never spoken before.
Words never to be returned.

So, there it went:
The final catch in my breath.
The middle of October
Saw a lorn confession—
All too late.
