Oda Do Starości

Oda do Starości

written by: Wojtek Garczarek

memento: Starość to nie srogość!

Już nie wyglądasz za bardzo młodo
choć w sercu żar z młodzieńczych lat,
nie jest też z ciebie Eugeniusz Bodo
co w butonierce, miał dla niej kwiat.

Ty! – Co najwyżej, skichać się możesz
po tej tabace – jeszcze po dziadku,
wyrywa ci serce, choć z nim coraz gorzej
bo geny masz dziadka, w spadku.

puchem marnym – stosownym do wieku,

*  Eugeniusz Bodo (właściwie Bohdan Eugène Junod), aktor i gwiazdor przedwojennego polskiego kina.

Ode to Old Age

written by: Wojtek Garczarek

memento: Old age need not be grim!

You no longer look very young,
though in your heart still burns the fire of youthful days,
you’re hardly Eugene Bodo,
with a flower in his buttonhole for her.

You! — At best you can sneeze
after that snuff — still your grandpa’s,
it tears at your heart, though the heart itself grows weaker,
because you inherited your grandpa’s genes.

Life slips through your fingers like water,
and your dentures are no longer so white;
how can you ever compare to Gene Bodo
with that lover’s smile permanently glued on.

You can only remain a beautiful soul,
a sorry bit of fluff — fitting for your age.
Why do you still smear on creams and scratch behind your ear?
Pull yourself together, you bitter old man!

Sometimes in life miracles still happen:
perhaps some woman, right by the doorknob,
will manage to slip a letter under your door,
just like Humphrey in Casablanca.

And maybe another one will make the effort,
because sometimes life can still go splendidly —
“gone with the wind” like Scarlett O’Hara,
she too will discreetly tuck a little note under your door.

*  Eugene Bodo (born Bohdan Eugène Junod) was the defining icon of Polish interwar cinema. As a celebrated actor, director, singer, and producer, he dominated the 1930s cultural scene before perishing tragically in a Soviet gulag during World War II.
