Privileged

Privileged

written by: Kenneth Vincent Walker

You are privileged
If you are white.
You are privileged
If you are thin.
You are privileged
If you’re a man,
Sometimes even
If you’re a woman.

You are privileged
If you are young.
You are privileged
If you can run like
The sailing wind.
You are privileged
If you are healthy.
You’re privileged
If you are wealthy.

You are privileged
Behind eyes of blue
With your privileged
Weave of flaxen hair.
You’re privileged if
You’re in the majority.
You’re privileged to be
In the right sorority.

You’re privileged if
You are tall or if
Your boobs are big.
You are privileged as
You bang your drums
And twirl your sticks.
You’re privileged if
You’re in politics.

You’re privileged if
You’re in the race.
You’re privileged if
You’re on the stage.
You’re privileged in
Singing like a bird.
You’re privileged at
Spitting spoken word.

The only counter to
Privilege is respect,

And a new mindset.
