Puddles

written by: Janina Osewska

translated by: Karol Chojnowski and Desmond Graham

To Wisława Szymborska

I remember well from my childhood

that joy
when it rained in summer and warm streams
joined heaven and earth like ribbons

I ran out without coat without shoes
lifted up my hands and stood
in the parallel of falling and standing

I became a raindrop
soaking into earth
evaporating cloudwards

when a gap broke open the sky
and the leaden puddles shone
I entered their mystery

the calm on the surface dependent on me
I paddled or wiggled a toe
maker of my world

independence and joy
are like an umbrella
ready for the worst downpour

Kałuże

written by: Janina Osewska

Wisławie Szymborskiej

dobrze z dzieciństwa pamiętam tę radość
kiedy latem padało i ciepłe strugi
niczym wstęgi łączyły niebo i ziemię

wybiegałam bez płaszcza i butów
podnosiłam ręce i trwałam
w równoległości padania i stania

stawałam się kroplą
wsiąkałam w głąb ziemi i parowałam
ku obłokom

gdy prześwit rozdzierał niebo
i jaśniały ołowiane kałuże
wstępowałam w tajemnicę ich bytu

ode mnie zależał spokój na powierzchni
brodziłam lub tylko poruszałam palcem
byłam twórcą kształtów mojego świata

niezależność i radość są jak parasol
gotowy na przyjęcie największej ulewy
