Rainfall of Gratitude

Rainfall of Gratitude

written by: Snigdha Agrawal

The rain arrives today
not in drops
but in silver sheets,
a gauzy curtain
drawn across grey skies,
each gust,
tilting the water
into new directions

The flowerpots
lined along the balcony railings
stand at attention,
patient sentinels,
receiving their ration
from the sky

the bougainvillea bow,
the jasmine trembles,
the hibiscus yawn,
exposing long filaments
while thirsty roots below
drink deeply
without complaint

The rain beats
a thousand tiny drums
upon leaves,
upon tiles,
upon memory

I sit and watch
a single thought
racing through the mind

At this age, one learns,
to measure wealth
in unusual ways
Not by houses owned,
or numbers in a bank
But by evenings like these
breathing in, breathing out
in a steady rhythm,
all senses awakened

and I find myself
counting blessings
as though,
they were raindrops,
one for each year survived,
one for each sorrow endured,
one for each friend remembered,
one for this pain-free day
unexpectedly gifted.

The clouds know nothing
of my gratitude,
they empty themselves
upon the waiting earth

I whisper thanks
for another fulfilling day,
another rainfall,
another ordinary miracle,
falling from the sky
