Remaining

Remaining

written by: Abagail Summers

A child,
lost in the woods,
searching for a way out.

Sunlight beams in,
lighting a spot,
a clearing.

She kneels in the wet grass,
hands sprawled in front,
lips tightened,
no one there.

Warmth blankets her,
bringing her comfort.
For a moment, she’s okay.

The trees gather,
wrapping their limbs
around her,
guarding her from the outside world,

separated from noise,
pardoned from what she has become.

Breathable distance,
darkness falls, surrounds her, shading her from the unknown.

Speckles of bright lights in the sky,
wishes to hold onto,
grabbing for a future that hides beyond the forest.

It calls her,
but she is in no hurry,
putting pieces back together,
connecting to what matters.

So when she leaves the woods,
the thorns will not cut,
the overgrown path will not trick her.

She’ll know,
in truth, she always has.
It’ll be waiting right where she left it.
