Scars Still Here

Scars Still Here

written by: William Lee Harness

Light cuts straight through me,
piercing the blades already broken.
Yesterday, uninvited,
stuck in my throat — I can’t swallow.

My chest is just old cuts, layered over with scars,
every breath picking at the wound.
If I stare too long into someone else’s eyes
for one second I think maybe,
just maybe this time it holds.
It never does.
The second ends,
numbness floods back faster than before.

Still I lift my head.
Still I want something bigger than this body,
than these shaking hands.

But the weight is mine,
always was.
It just shifts from one shoulder to the other.

Still human,
still here,
still bleeding a little.
