So Far

we three sat semi circle
we had decided not to rehearse
we would speak as individuals, when inspired as a group
we had a home full of family, neighbors, coworkers, teachers
we had the reporter

the obituary had been sent
the wheels were in motion
the other calls (funeral home, all the relatives, everyone)
the principal from our High School had called offering support
the ask to inform of Kyle’s passing
the next morning

all the ducks were being lined up
all of us, I felt needed to lie down
all the “things” logistically listed as if there was any logic left
all the all’s, family, a pastor, all most a priest held all our hands
all showing a path
all a glimmer of purpose
all maybe we could navigate

the reporter asked “was it a suicide”
the reporter asked “will you share”
the principal asked “will you share”
the answer “yes it was a suicide
yes we will share”
Not talking about teen suicide
has not worked well so far.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

An interview we engaged in prior to Kyle’s funeral.
We decided to be transparent with his suicide. The Calgary Sun did a feature and Alberta Legislative Assembly read his letter on the floor, as did his High School for the open record.
