Spotlight On Writers
Angela Carlton
- Where do you originate from?
I was born in the southern part of the US in the state of Georgia. I’m a southern girl who daydreams and loves the food: like gravy biscuits, collards, fried okra and pot pie. I love the southern culture too, the charm and mannerisms, the way most people focus on kindness. It’s good for the soul.
- What do you cherish most about the place you call home?
I love the music: Allman Brothers, Black Crowes, ZZ Top, Ray Charles, Kings of Leon and southern authors like Tennessee Williams, Terry Kay, Sue Monk Kidd and Pat Conroy. I recently built a tin shed under the birch trees to be one with nature, a place where I can write under the marshmallow clouds.
- What ignites your creativity?
Being born from a mother who’s a song writer and father, who’s a musician, I would have to say music and the lyrics behind stellar songs ultimately shaped me. I’d listen to tunes over and over again to get wrapped inside the words, and the beauty of the language. Then, I’d go write furiously in a journal. The rhythm and the lyrics behind the melodies inspired me to write poetry as a teen which later turned into flash fiction.
- Do you have a favorite word and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?
My favorite word is RISE…
I hope you get to hear the seagulls cry again and watch them rise, rise, rise across the indigo sky, flying away with the wind to remind us that our spirit’s free.
For now, I know, it is the little things that matter when you’re ill.
Yes, one day, you and I, we’ll be free
- What is your pet peeve?
Being a writer means you’re a communicator; you thrive on words and responses. I find when people don’t follow through or respond leaving a space wide open like a black hole is truly frustrating when you’ve taken the time and effort out of your day. Yes, I’ve had my share of not hearing back from publishers.
- How would you describe the essence of Angela Carlton?
I am a dreamer, a lover of art, music and nature. I’m a girl who spills words daily. I’m drawn to characters who are broken, the ones who are wounded, scarred and in need. I’m also drawn to people who are addicted to love or a substance, something that takes them out of the realm and in need of saving.
