Spotlight On Writers – Heath Brougher

Spotlight On Writers

Heath Brougher

  1. Where, do you hail from?

York, Pennsylvania.

  1. What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?

5 years ago I would have said “nothing” but as I began doing poetry readings I’ve met some really interesting people.

  1. What turns you on creatively?

Anything that causes me to think deeply or introduces a new thought/idea I had never considered. I like books that take me forever to read because I’m stopping every page or so and just sitting and quietly thinking about what I’ve just read.

  1. What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?

That’s a hard one. I might have to go with kerfuffle. I just like the way it sounds. To use it in a sentence:

“The fact that I smashed every window in my apartment is what caused this whole kerfuffle with my landlord.”

Lol!

  1. What is your pet peeve?

The corruption and cronyism that runs rampant in the lit world. Professors and especially MFA instructors destroying anything that dares be different. Soon enough anyone who so much as tries anything new, be clubbed right back into mediocrity. 99% of people don’t even understand what “poetry” even is. Most of all MFA instructors. They have a vested interest in lying to themselves as well as their students when they say that poetry is something that can be defined and turned into something you can put your finger on, when, in fact, the exact opposite is true. “Poetry” is complete and utter freedom. It’s sad that the majority of what is written today isn’t True Poetry but instead an imitation of poetry.

  1. What defines Heath Brougher?

I don’t really like to be defined by specific terms as I believe they can restrict the creativity and sincerity of the person who is having these terms applied to him. The words I am OK with using to define myself are (not just using adjectives here): Freedom, Truth, Sanity, Outsider of the Herd Poisoned Masses, Spiralist (both of writing and thought).
