Spotlight On Writers
- Where, do you hail from?
I'm from San Juan, Puerto Rico but I grew up in Chicago and lived most of my adult life in El Paso, Texas. My parents are from a tiny little town in Puerto Rico that I also call home, Jayuya, since all of my living aunts and cousins still live there.
- What is the greatest thing about the place you call home?
The people but it's not the only thing. The people of San Juan are so friendly. They will strike up a conversation with you in an instant. They are helpful and creative, very creative. Nature is another great thing about Puerto Rico. I live two blocks away from the beach. My mother's hometown is in the central mountains. Nature is amazing here.
- What turns you on creatively?
Everyday living is what turns on my creativity. I mostly write about what happens in my life or in the life of people I love and care about. It makes me conscious about how connected, fragile, and powerful we humans are.
- What is your favorite word, and can you use it in a poetic sentence?
Pena = Sorrow
asustando ardillas y tronando petardos
sin poder desechar
- What is your pet peeve?
Submitting poetry I would say is what I like the very least along with not knowing how many people are reading my poems.
- What defines Sergio A. Ortiz?
Love and betrayal in out gay community. Gossip is so prevalent in the gay community. Without we could get so much more accomplished. We need unity and tolerance of/for our differences.
