Squirrel Cake

written by: Kang Yihyun

While eating cake, I spat out a bone. It crackled in my mouth like something fried. Inside the sliced cake, more than half the squirrel still remained. How had I thought of a squirrel. There was no suspicious tail in sight. I have no idea when the cake had become oversized. That was the first time I learned of the existence of squirrel cake. If the squirrel was certain, then the cake could no longer be. For a while after that, I couldn’t bring myself to touch cake. Every time I ran into a squirrel in the park, I felt a trace of guilt. Was it really a squirrel that I had swallowed. It was already too late for doubt to separate us.
