The Hand I Never Held

The Hand I Never Held

written by: Enviara

I always wanted what I was denied,
yet I remember you calling me unkind.
I always wanted to hold that hand,
the one that left me to misery and pain.

The bond I yearned, the warmth I craved
I only wanted to hold your hand.
Envy struck when I saw children laugh,
their swings soaring high in the sky,
while I stood behind the tower’s gate,
learning too early how to cry.

I always believed the fault was mine,
waiting through darkness, weathering storms,
holding to hope that one day you’d show.
Maybe I’m selfish for wanting it so,
but I still wish that someday you’d stay
not with rehearsed and borrowed lines,
but with something your heart truly says.

I’ll still be your little girl in the rain,
waiting, hoping you might appear again.
And even now, I reach for you,
though I know you may never stand.
All I wanted, all I still want,
is to hold, just once, my father’s hand
