The Lives and Dreams of Some of Us

his left eye
was just a crumpled piece
of paper
that he put there to
fill the socket

“It would look better
empty, man,” said
every other homeless guy
who saw it. “That color… Makes it
look like it’s about
to burst with pus. At least
replace it with a
better looking thing.”

but he wasn’t one to
listen to the crowds

the one time he took that
paper out
was when he lost it
in a back alley brawl
after a good hook connected
to his chin

It’s only normal for
the odd one out
to attract some sort of
conflict
and he was no different

Someone found the paper
among other litter
a while later

and spread it open
and revealed
the drawing of a happy family
holding hands before a house.
A drawing that a child
would make and a parent would
hang on the fridge door.
There was a mother, a father, and
a child between them. A dog in the left
corner too.

Utterly unimpressive
as far as art went

so
small wonder it was
crumpled again
and thrown away again

Just like the
lives and dreams of
some of us
