Went to Springfield with my wife
Visited the Abraham Lincoln museum

Took photographs near sculptures
Of family, including the child who died young

Walked along walls decorated with history
Civil War timeline, propoganda, battle maps

Went to the gift store, tried on
A Lincoln-style top hat that did not fit

Wound our way through the graveyard
To Abraham’s tomb, saw the bust

Of Lincoln in front, great likeness
Noble features, nose worn from being touched

For luck. With all we saw and learned,
I needed a word, a line, a speech

From his mouth, the fog slid
Between gravestones, a light

Breeze rustled branches of trees, then passed
I left overcome by peace and silence
