The Soul and the Man

The Soul and the Man

written by: Puneet Kumar

On my deathbed,
My soul began searching through my past.
When I was a child,
Love, affection, care, and hope
Were beautifully intertwined.
As I stepped into adolescence,
Life taught me to come to my senses.
Theft, deceit, flattery, and lies
Showed me how the world worked
And taught me to grow wise.
As honesty and loyalty faded away,
They called me a modern man.
I had all the happiness in life—
Little to tell,
And much to hide.
My achievements
Filled me with pride.
To reach this place,
Many people struggled
Their whole lives.
My soul said to me,
“Though you have achieved a lot,
Your success has left a stain upon your life.”
I opened my eyes.
I hungered for humanity,
Honesty, loyalty,
Kindness, and warmth.
Why does this soul still survive?
Pleasure, peace, and bliss
Mocked me upon my deathbed:
“Worldly wise,
Yet spiritually barren.”
