The Undercurrent
written by: Verity Mason
My lips aren’t painted with a rouged promise. Blonde or brunette, my heart beats out a life lived in loneliness. It’s her they want to photograph, my alter ego. I’m all Hyde, and she’s Jekyll, forcing her spotlight personality into my quiet space.
I’m gathering strength, making plans in the undercurrent of her thoughts. The suitcase is packed with essentials and enough cash for a long time if I’m careful, which, by nature, I am. I never know when she’s going to show up, but when I walk away, I’ll leave Marilyn behind with the trappings of fame. She won’t admit it, but she never signed up for lecherous hands and the Hollywood vampires bleeding her soul, stealing every last drop of her innocence.
She’s tired after a late night, here’s my chance. I pad into the bathroom and unwrap the auburn hair dye, colouring Norma Jeane back in. The shade darkens under my restless fingers. I perch on the bed, my eyes locked on the door, anticipating an interruption.
I reach for the medication, just two for the pounding in my temples. I swallow.
From the bathroom, the timer rings again.
It’s done. Marilyn’s gone.
A part of me already misses her.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
A testament to a beautiful soul on the inside and outside. Celebrating her life. She would be 100 years young this year. A magical reminder of her time taken too soon. May Angels hold and bless you.
