Tilling The Fields
written by: H. W. Bryce
Tilling the field of ideas,
The plow turning over neat lines
Of poetry titles, one-line iambs,
Suggestions, worms of metaphors,
Ideas revealed and scattered across
The furloughs for the sea gulls to
Swoop down and sample, to carry
To my back yard and drop off into
My garden of similes and verses and
Feelings, sharing the lore of the
Pioneers who founded us and by whom
Many of us still live
There is much to say about the fertile
Life of the word farmer living on a diet
Of rich loam feeding the idea factory
With fodder to store in the silo of the brain
Like a Farmer’s Almanac of facts and fun,
A dictionary of samples, similes, metaphors
All at the ready, ripening for the beauty
Of it all, and for the nourishment of
The people, processed and refined by
The word farmer to enrich the reader’s life.
I like the open air of this farm life, I like
The smell of discovery, the sound of the
Paragraphs and the parodies that grow
Out of this fertile land, I like the humor
Of the bees buzzing and feasting on the
Nectar of these flowers of life, the stems
Of affirmation, the nourishment of their
Offerings, for their story telling and that
These fields, these fields of creation, hold
To enrich the poetry that I reap and the
Grandeur of the sharing, as that is what
These things are for, the sharing.
I store them in the bin of my mind.
Honor the land; it is the foundation of life.
I love the way the birds of fancy carry the
Seeds of fruition to spread abroad, carry
The meanings, the kernels of truth for the
Sharing, and how the caring sprouts from
Their shoots, how such suggestions can
Spread the word of wonder and inspiration.
Yes, in the beginning there was THE Word,
And all other words came from that word,
And THAT word was Love. Spread the word.
So tend your crop, with caring love. It will
Produce such amazing flowers and fodder.
