To Hold The Sea
written by: Sahendra Mallick
Life’s like a beach
high tides come
low tides go
the seawater
is always salty
eating away the rocks
splash by splash
boulders turn to pebbles
pebbles turn to sand.
We use that sand
to build grand castles
or make fine glass
but the castles wash away
and glass shatters
for life, much like water
keeps flowing
to and fro.
People drift in and out
like the coarse, salty wind
we change too
as the shoreline shifts
with the relentless waves.
One day, the seawater
might sweep everything under
but the waves eventually settle
goes back to normal
life, too, finds a way…
Strange, isn’t it then
how desperately we
cup our hands
to hold the sea?
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
Our desperation to hold on to what we love, or once loved, is futile. Some things are meant to slip away.
