Voices In The Dark

written by: Mark Kuglin

“Who are you to violate our trust?” a bass voice suddenly asked, then quickly added  “We were counting on you to fulfill your obligations and you have failed miserably! What do you have to say for yourself?”

Instantly, I was startled by the outburst. I couldn't see anything and had no idea where the voice had come from. I strained to hear, but before I could get a sense of its direction, a second male voice shouted back indignantly, “Who are you to question me?”

Thoroughly confused— and with a bit of fear creeping in, I struggled to make sense of what was going on. A moment later, I was completely scared out of my mind when a shrill female voice loudly interjected, “We have every right…And we demand an answer!”

“You have no right to demand anything!” the indignant voice shouted back.

“We have every right,” both accusers interjected in unison.

A moment later, an option came to me and I didn't like it. I wanted to help the indignant man but I knew the others would turn on me. Completely immobilized, I listened on in fear.

“I am the victim of a smear campaign filled with outright lies and vicious innuendos,” the indignant man continued.

That's not true!” the shrill female snapped back. “You have no one to blame. Your arrogance and deceptions brought all of this on.”

“That's right,” the bass voice added with a hint of menace. “Do the right thing or we’ll have to take matters into our own hands.”

By this point, I was in a full blown panic. Then, like a lightning bolt, it suddenly hit me. I raced to the top of the stairs and angrily shouted down, “Which one of you idiots turned my clock radio to a talk station?”
