War Gods

War Gods

written by: Bilquis Fatima

I have seen the sky rain cinders, and the town bleed,
explosions of furor, havoc wreak,
dragon flames engulf innocent lives,
as muffling smoke swirled, reaching the sky,
giving no one, the time to bid goodbye.

Eyes froze under glasses shattered, as shards pierced soft flesh,
buildings fell like pack of cards, trapping humans in their mesh,
remnants of fabrics, plastics, utensils and all that one possessed
peeped through grotesque piles, charred and brutally pressed
and in a blink of an eye, sweet breaths of life turned into calls of distress.

Vast expanse of roses and poppy fields evaporated in thin air,
leaving behind dead bodies strewn in pool of despair.
How cruel can be wars, even the birds they did not spare,
due to uprooted nests, the frightened flocks flew here and there,
amidst machines searching targets with their deadly glare.

Every time the land was rocked by blasts
left a list of people who breathed their last,
and every time this truth shook me from within,
as to how could they all die so fast,
it was just moments before, I saw them last.

I have looked up at the ashen sky,
and tried asking the War-Gods, so sly
“What more is left to satiate your hysterical greed,
how long do you intend to stretch the bloody game of fear,
for even if one wins, who will be left to cheer?”
