Wednesday’s Fall to Thursday Mourn

Wednesday’s Fall to Thursday Mourn

written by: Johnch

I watched the yellow leaf
Twist and twirl in the breeze
Until it could hold no more
Took its leave from the tree
To dance and pirouette endlessly

I could hear no tune, no song
To hold the leaf in dance.

Wednesday dies in black.

I watched the yellow leaf

Creased faces hover over
bodies draped in shadow
Walking the night’s path.
Slashes of red mark their
lips, frozen shut, trying—

Twist and twirl in the breeze

Eyes fixed, bleed blank into unthinking stare.
Ears dulled to the scream—
Yet cars ooze their stifling miasma,
death curling around blackened knees
scuffed in obeisance’s dance.

Until it could hold no more

A little girl pirouettes in suffocating agony,
Her gasping “mummy help” falls, ends with hush Wednesday.

Took its leave from the tree
To dance and pirouette endlessly

Faces framed by black glass
Glowering behind, hold fading shadows.

Above a neon light blinks,
ghastly puce shining on the screaming Erinyes,
Pings—work, work, work.

Sound of shuffling feet quiets as
Walkers pause in syncopated sway, stopped by the red.

Cold acid rain forces
The unfurling of black umbrellas.
The little girl hides under hers, red, still gasping—
Her red cries across the black.

I could hear no tune, no song
To hold the leaf in dance

The waiting chorus through squeezed lips,
Humming Mozart’s Requiem, to the beat of “mummy please,”
Their lives failing into Thursday dissonance.
