What the Fire Couldn’t Erase

A pep came into her step as she heard the mailman drop a letter.
In this technology-savvy century, a handwritten note felt like magic.
Seeing his name on the envelope, her heart skipped just like before.
She felt butterflies in her stomach, wings trembling with rising hope.
It sparked within her like fire, racing through her fragile veins.
Her hands trembled as she held the letter, the seal still intact.
Unaware, as she tore it open, her hope began to tear too.
This wasn’t a letter to cherish in a silk-ribboned memory box.
It wasn’t one to revisit on quiet nights with longing smiles.
This was the kind to rip apart, bury, and burn to ash.
Not written in flowing ink but in fire that scorched the page.
Now her tears fell too, bleeding through the stinging words.
The letter came from the one her heart had never forgotten.
But it wasn’t a love letter, not the kind she’d dreamed of.
It held no sweet nothings, no promises, no soft-spoken forever.
It was filled with silence between the lines and heavy finality.
The warmth she expected had turned to a sharp, numbing chill.
His words were measured, final—each one like a closing door.
She read them once, twice, then not again, for they burned.
The hope she’d carried was now smoke in the summer air.
She stepped into the backyard, the letter clutched tightly in her hand.
Under the old tree, she struck a match without a second thought.
Watched as flames consumed the last pieces of what once was.
She didn’t cry anymore; her heart had already read the ending.
The last word, in bold handwriting, echoed like a slammed door.
And before he signed off, he wrote just one word:
Goodbye…
