What To Say

What To Say

written by: Sheri M. Stewart

What to do
when it’s not OK today
when asked how I am
I don’t know what to say…

Do I smile
and let it pass
or be honest,
life’s kicking my ass?

I already know
what you want to hear
happy little illusions
filled with good cheer.

I’ve learned that people
don’t know what to say
when someone is down
And things just aren’t OK.

They have forgotten
or never were taught
that pain and sorrow
simply can not be caught.

When presented with
an unhappy face
they quickly crumple
and vanish without trace.

So maybe for today
you should just walk on by
but don’t sit there and watch
as I curl up and cry.

I’ll tell you a secret
when push comes to shove
most of us have forgotten
simply how to love.

So in my uncertain pause
deciding if my sorrow I should bare
know you can help me decide
if you simply show that you care.

I tell you true, if you do
a friend you have made
such bonds aren’t soon broken
and you’ll be glad that you stayed.

For when you are in need
and you’ve nowhere to hide
others turn and run
but I’ll be by your side.

But for now here I sit
riddled with fears
hoping you won’t leave me
alone with my tears.
