Wishes Between the Lines

Wishes Between the Lines

written by: Fizza Younis

If I’m a story,
Let it be unwritten,
Retold only through oral tradition,
A new chapter added with every retell.
Let them relay it how they please,
Tragic, romantic, sad, and sometimes
Happy—a tale that’s never told as is.
If it’s told at all.

But if I’m a poem,
Let me write it myself,
Not a word amiss or a period out of place,
Every line as it originally was, preserved.
Let them recite it as they will,
Finding new meanings within the same verses,
Sometimes, reading between the lines.
If it’s read at all.

If I’m a picture,
Let it be worth a thousand words,
Each word having three different meanings,
And every sequence of words a different story.
Let them stare at it and wonder,
Is it a thousand words or ten thousand wishes?
For are we not all a mystery waiting to be solved,
If it’s solved at all.
