Lighthouse

Lighthouse

When I was a kid, on my island,
There was a lighthouse
That glowed like a gigantic glowworm.

For me, it was the tallest thing
On earth,
From where I could see
The seven seas and the whole world!

I fancied it as the magic lamp
Of Aladdin of the legends,
Wielding the beam of its light
All over like a sword.
Ships of yore in the seas
Danced around the lamp,
In a magical rhythm –
I fancied!
On the loneliest nights,
The magic lamp shimmered:
And a folk of outlandish genii
Emerged from seas
To play in the light…

Years withered away…
As I grew older
And my fantasies withered away too.

Once again, I stood before the lighthouse.
A dwarf compared to
The skyscrapers I have met
On my metro wanderings.

I lay alone in my solitary nights,
No light glowed,
And no genie came,
Swimming past the magical seas.
I light a candle,
And in its glimmering light,
I look at the lighthouse yonder,
Still wielding its light
Like a worn-out soldier,
Aged and spent,
With its dreams stolen:
Yet,
Casting light
For lonely ships to come home!
